How the Gyllenhaal family geneology site began
From Dennis Gyllenhaal:
This project started with my reading of Uncle Charles’ book. During 2022 and 2023 I spent most of my time at home caring for my wife Nel. During that time, as I read through Uncle Charles’ book, I realized that it ended with the marriages of each of the siblings, but included nothing about their lives following World War Two. There was a section on Granny’s grandchildren, but not a lot of detail. I realized that I did not know much about all of my cousins, their children and grandchildren.
I started researching from the information I was able to get from Mom and Pam (telephone numbers, emails, etc.). In Dad and Mom’s records I was able to find some of the early versions of Uncle Charles’ book that were sent to Dad to review. Included in that was a survey that he sent to all his brothers and sisters. That became to foundation of my survey.
After Mon died last year (the final member of her generation to leave us), I inherited three arge boxes of photos and a great number of folders with information on the family. I scanned most of the photos to save them, organized them by family and stored them in acid-free photos boxes (I have 10 of them now). I scanned more than 500 photos.
Through emails, phone calls and face-to-face interviews with many of you, I was able to put together the family tree that you see here. I asked Anders and Beverly to help in 2025, and he developed this wonderful site. What you see is a living document and I hope it grows over time. I am not through with bothering those of you that I have not interviewed and pictures and stories are very welcome
